COST THE MOST

He works 12 hours, skips lunch to pick up her prescription, rushes home to cook dinner, and she looks at the plate and says, “You didn’t make it how I like it.”

He wants to throw the plate away and say, “Then make your own damn dinner.”

Instead, he fixes it.

After working all day, dealing with the kids, fixing a broken sink, and finally sitting down for five minutes, she says, “I need you right now.”

She doesn’t need an emergency — she just wants to tell him something she could have told him tomorrow.

He gets back up.

She says, “I’m fine, go ahead,” so he leaves for something important, then she calls him furious because “you should’ve known I didn’t really mean it.”

It has happened so many times that he wants to scream, “USE YOUR WORDS!”

Instead, he comes home and asks what she needed.

She spends money they don’t have on something she desperately wanted, and now they’re short on a bill because of it.

When he says they need to fix it, she says, “You’re my husband — you figure it out.”

He fixes the immediate problem without humiliating her, then tells her the truth.

She explodes over something he did yesterday and somehow brings up something he did seven years ago — while forgetting the things she’s done that he forgave.

He has enough ammunition to destroy the argument in thirty seconds.

He puts the ammunition down.

She has a horrible day and unloads it on him, calling him selfish even though he spent the entire day serving her and the kids.

His first thought is, “Oh, we’re being disrespectful today? I can do disrespectful too.”

He refuses to return the fire.

She says something so cruel that he spends the next three hours replaying it, then she comes into the bedroom and says, “Can you hold me?”

Every cell in his body screams, “Absolutely not — you don’t get comfort after hurting me.”

He holds her anyway — but doesn’t pretend nothing happened.

He smiles at a woman while asking where something is, and his wife later interrogates him like he’s hiding a second family.

He wants to say, “You’re being ridiculous,” because the accusation is irrational.

Instead, he reassures her without agreeing with the accusation.

She is obviously wrong, knows she’s wrong, and still refuses to apologize — because she knows he’ll eventually come to her.

He’s exhausted from always breaking the silence and thinks, “Not this time.”

He walks into the room anyway and opens the door to peace.

After years of him sacrificing his comfort, money, time, sleep, and plans for her, she looks him in the eyes and says, “You never sacrifice for me.”

His whole body wants to unload the evidence and make her feel ashamed for saying it.

Instead, he asks, “Tell me what makes you feel unloved.”

She wakes him after a 14-hour shift because she suddenly wants cereal from the store — and when he gets back, she says he bought the wrong kind.

He wants to explode: “I just drove 20 minutes at 2 a.m. for YOU!”

Love costs him the right to make her feel guilty for what she asked him to do.
